I’ve heard many versions for the storyLa Llorona ( The Wailer). Here’s my favorite version.

In a small Mexico village, There lived a woman named Maria. She was very beautiful and wealthy. Every girl in the village wanted to be Maria. Maria thought no man was “Good enough for her”. Until Alexander a man from the village found her. He had heard many stories about Maria’s beauty and he was willing to capture her and her heart. When Maria saw this very handsome man she thought” I’m going to get him and his money and be the wealthiest woman in the whole city.” She played a few tricks on Alexander, But Alexander fell into her traps anyways. They got married and they were the happiest couple in the whole village.

Then a few years passed, Maria and Alexander had their first baby boy. They named him Alejandro. Then when Alejandro was six, they had another baby girl and they named her Sophia. Then things started to change. Her husband was rarely even home. Coming back late from work. Not showing any affection towards Maria. Maria started getting really jealous. Alexander started paying more attention to the children than Maria. Then, Maria started neglecting the kids.

A few days later, her husband finally came home. But, something was wrong. He came out the car , there was another woman in the car. Alexander wanted to leave Maria for another wealthier woman. Maria got so angry, she slapped him across the face. Alexander pushed her and said ” If you do anything to my kids, I will kill you and no one will know that I did it. I’ll pick them up in the morning.” Then he left with all his belongings. When her husband left, she got her children and started beating, slapping and kicking them until they were full of blood and there body were purple. Then she started yelling at them” You two are a mistake and I wish I had an abortion!” Maria took the kids clothes off and dragged them by the hair into the bathroom. She threw them into the bathroom and turned on the icy-cold water and showered them.She locked them into their room without eating.

No one would imagined what would happened next.

Maria was full of rage. She would stop at nothing to get rid of her children. When her kids were finally asleep, She carried the oldest Alejandro (6) to the lake behind her house , and got into the water. When the water was up to her waist, she let go of sleepy Alejandro and grabbed him by the head and started drowning him. She let go of him when he stopped moving, Laying lifeless on top of the water. Then she did the same thing to baby Sophia(2).

Then when she finally got back to her senses, She realized what she had done. She started wailing, crying and screaming for what she had done. She tried to get them back but they were already down the other side of the lake. So drowned herself .

In the early morning the village people started screaming because they saw Maria’s kids floating dead on the water. They never found Maria’s body. When they told the news to Alexander, he started cryings and screaming ” I will go find and kill Maria for what she has done to my children.” The village people knew Maria was dead because they heard a scream last night. Then Don Danny told Alexander “Maria is dead.” Alexander was in shock and said ” I should have never left Maria and my children.” Don said ” You should have said that to her yesterday and this tragedy wouldn’t have had happened and you shouldn’t have left her for this rich brat. Good day Sir and goodbye.”

A few days later Alexander left the village to forget what had happened.

Few weeks later at night when the moon is up you Can her La Llorona also called the Wailer calling for her dead children ” Mis niños, Donde están mis niños.” She looks for her kids through out rivers, lakes and streams in Central America. If a child is playing near or standing near a river La Llorona ( The Wailer) grabs them and drags them into the water. She thinks those are her dead children.

A small boy named Jose was late to his house. He was at a friend house and lost track of time. Then clouds started rolling in and he heard a small voice saying “Mis niños, Donde están mis niños.” Then it got louder and louder. He froze and he saw this woman eyes were full of blood, mouth was black with yellow teeth, hands were wrinkly, finger nails were black and yellow, her nose was missing, her hair was falling, her feet were scraped and full with blood and her clothes was ripped and thin. She was scary thin. When Jose saw all this, he was scared out of is mind. His whole body was frozen,even his mouth. She grabbed his legs and started dragging him. When they were almost in the water, the church bell rung. Jose could feel her hand getting looser and looser. Until she was gone.

Jose ran home. His mom got angry and yelled at him but she stopped and looked at his face expression, and said ” Son what happened to you. You have hand prints all over you arms and legs.” Jose said ” La Llorona was trying to grab me.” His mom said ” La Llorona. What . When. Where.” Jose told her mom about what happened and how the church bells save him. His mom handed him a blue and red Rosary and said ” Son this will keep you safe.” Then Jose put it on. Then few days later Jose’s family moved away.

So families don’t let their children go out and play or wander around at night, because they are scared that La Llorona will snatch them, kill them and take their poor souls.

So be careful when your by yourself at night because you don’t know who else is standing next to you, like La Llorona. You never know if you Hear her say ” Mis niños, Donde están mis niños.” But, you can never hide or escape her. So start running when you hear her.
